World Philanthropy Declaration

The International Day of Charity and the China Charity Day were observed on September 5th, 2016. We, the practitioners, researchers, managers, and promoters of philanthropy, gather at Tsinghua University in Beijing to discuss the major plans and strategies for the world philanthropy. We have carried out discussion on issues of common concern, including the Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents' Health, China's experience and international cooperation in targeted poverty alleviation, future-oriented social value investment, social work and social services, foundations and wealth sharing, as well as the construction of the philanthropy discipline and the academic community. We have reached the following consensus: the world today is a world of economic globalization, and also a world of philanthropy globalization. Various forms of nonprofit organizations have flourished, and the total of the value created, services rendered, and employment contributed by nonprofit organizations is comparable to a large industrial category or the level of a medium-sized country. They become the backbone of philanthropy in the world. More and more private wealth becomes the resources of philanthropy in the form of donations, etc.; social enterprises, social influence investment and social value investment have expanded apace and entered the philanthropy sector; resources from the public sector including the government procurement services also enter the philanthropy sector at a growing rate; the development and applications of mobile Internet and big data technology advance in leaps and bounds, promoting the network philanthropy and social innovation of various forms; volunteer service permeates all aspects of social life. Philanthropy is at our fingertips and is open to anyone. It brings together the private wealth of the citizens for our common benefit. The vigorous development of philanthropy and its role hinge on extensive citizen participation, sound system guarantee, good system support and professional operation and management. To this end, we appeal that:

1. Everyone must pay attention to and participant in philanthropy, making it a key carrier of civic life, civic culture and civic spirit; encourage more market forces to participate in philanthropy; vigorously develop philanthropy and social innovation of various forms.
       2. Governments must protect and promote philanthropy. Establish a sound legal and policy system related to philanthropy, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of persons and organizations involved in philanthropy, and reduce regulations and restrictions; develop and improve the service purchase to promote extensive cooperation between governments and charitable organizations.
       3. Society must show tolerance and support for philanthropy. Form the civil value and culture system conducive to the healthy development of philanthropy; establish and develop the ecosystem and its support system for philanthropy.

4. Exercise self-discipline and strengthen philanthropy. Foster the development of philanthropy industry organizations, and establish and improve the industry self-regulation system; strengthen capacity-building and professional development of charitable organizations.

     We will hold the World Philanthropy Forum on a regular basis to advocate and promote the development of philanthropy worldwide.
     We are convinced that all people are kind-hearted. We are committed to doing good deeds for the community and promoting the world philanthropy. We dream of greater harmony in the world!
